Powerful New Portable LNG Vaporizer Boasts
High Pressure and Flow Rate of a Stationery Unit

(Greenland, NH)  A new, high-capacity portable LNG vaporizer that surpasses the pressure and volume limits of previous portables has been announced by CHI Engineering Systems of Greenland, NH.

With a pressure and flow rate comparable to a stationery LNG vaporizer, the powerful new CHI 700/500 will be a boon for pipeline companies trying to juggle peakshaving, pipeline maintenance, and repairs to LNG facilities or distribution systems. It can supply transmission or distribution systems for planned or emergency outages.

Peter C. Dirksen, CHI vice president and principal engineer, said, "What makes the CHI 700/500 unique is that it is has the largest vaporization capacity and discharge pressure of any unit we're aware of. It allows operators to hydrotest transmission lines without disrupting service to large number of customers."

Dirksen cited mounting demand as one of the reasons his firm designed a portable vaporizer that delivers up to 500 PSIG.

"By combining the flexibility of a portable with the power of a conventional installation, this device will enable our clients to meet strict new rules from FERC for pipeline integrity," Dirksen added.

Baseline assessments of high consequence pipelines are required under the 2002 Pipeline Safety Act. Hydrotesting is often more cost-effective than ILI or direct assessment, Dirksen said, verifying pipeline integrity with a minimum of inconvenience and expense. Hydrotests also eliminate the additional investigations and excavations that result from inconclusive ILI and direct assessment data.

The CHI 700/500 portable features a water-bath vaporizer equipped with redundant burners, dual truck unloading stations, natural gas fueled generator set, LNG pump trailer with two LNG pumps, and a YZ Odorizer System.

Currently under construction, the first model is scheduled for delivery to El Paso Energy by October 1. Like CHI's smaller portables, the new model is being built on a conventional trailer bed so it can easily be towed by standard truck to any site where it's needed. It contains a complete odorization system and on-board electric generator to provide all necessary power. Setup and tear-down take just a few hours, about the same as a smaller-capacity portable.

The CHI 700/500 portable LNG vaporizer will be available for rent or lease, with expert CHI personnel on-site to operate the equipment.

New Hampshire-based CHI has provided engineering and consultation services since 1978, including the design and construction of turnkey installations for LNG and natural gas operators throughout the country. Its innovative and cost-effective solutions include baseload and satellite LNG facilities, pre-fabricated gate stations and regulator stations.
